We discuss the value of this version of the story versus other adaptations; additions and modifications which flesh out Seuss' original story, whilst remaining true to the critique on modern commercialism, materialism, and consumerism; Ron Howard's direction in adapting this timeless holiday classic and overall cinematography; and, of course, Mr. Carrey's zany role in this film, which brought new life to the character. Collateral Cinema wishes you a merry/happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, or whatever you're celebrating this season! And stay tuned for more content after the New Year!

SHOWNOTES: Happy Halloween, Collateral Cinema fans! We're celebrating the 2019 holiday by discussing one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time, and another this season based on a best-selling novel by Stephen King: The Shining, the 1980 movie adaptation directed, produced, and written by Stanley Kubrick! Beau, Robert, and Ash appraise the value of the film as a pop culture phenomenon, give our thoughts on the cinematic direction taken by Kubrick in comparison and contrast to King's original story, and analyze the implicit qualities of layered storytelling throughout. We even have time to mention the documentary film Room 237 and the upcoming sequel adaptation Doctor Sleep. PODCAST SHOUTOUT: Black Girls Do Stuff Too! (@BlkGirlsDoStuff)
SHOWNOTES: Welcome to Collateral Cinema Season Three! We wanted to start off with something a little more contentious: Beau, Robert, Ashley, and Dakota don't actually agree on how we feel about the 2016 DCEU superhero (or supervillain) movie Suicide Squad, directed and written by David Ayer! Which of us wholeheartedly agrees with the generally negative critical consensus? Which of us feels there's something of value here to be apologists for? Which of us just likes that custom-made Joker car? Listen to find out! This Season Premiere, Collateral Cinema discusses the questionable cinematography, well-chosen but not-so-well-implemented soundtrack, mixed-reception casting, and the problematic reshooting and editing process that happened in the production of Suicide Squad. We also make comparisons on the part of Jared Leto's Joker performance against the many others (including Joaquin Phoenix' recent portrayal in the standalone titular movie), as well as this movie as a whole to its obvious Marvel counterpart and cinematic adaptation inspiration Guardians of the Galaxy from James Gunn—and on that note, predictions of where Gunn will take the announced sequel/soft reboot The Suicide Squad set in the DC Extended Universe, in addition to what we expect from the upcoming sequel Birds of Prey! There's a lot to dig in here, and a lot to harp on in this film, but most importantly, did we have fun talking about it?

While getting ready for Season Three, Collateral Cinema visited our local theater once more to see the newly released film adaptation of the 1986 classic novel by Stephen King and sequel to the 2017 hit film: It—that is, we watched It Chapter Two and gave our thoughts on the supernatural horror movie still fresh in our minds! SHOWNOTES: Thank you Collateral Cinephiles for an absolutely fun and successful second season! We're happy to celebrate it with our finale episode on a cult classic very near and dear to our hearts: The Princess Bride! Featuring for the first time on the show our friend and fellow movie fan Megan Price, we analyze the massive impact of this culturally and memetically significant film, itself a member of both the Criterion Collection and National Film Registry. Adapted from the 1973 novel of the same name, The Princess Bride also leaves much for us to discuss in its unforgettable cast of characters; many, many memorable quotes; well-done use of a frame narrative; and fairy tale plot style. We felt this movie was the perfect send-off for an incredible season, and we hope you'll share our excitement for both the film and our podcast! Look forward to our interim bonus episodes (to be announced) and Collateral Cinema Season Three—starting with the divisive Suicide Squad this October!
